The symbols are obvious for example Ultima's owl is flying above and there's Ultima, Anonio, and Anotnio's mother. There's also the llano.

I think that the moon represents the Luna. It kind foreshadows what path Antonio might take. In the picture it shows Antonio and Ultima leaving his mother. It kind kind of means that Antonio is growing up and leaving her. I also think that since his mother is in the background that Antonio might be leaning toward the Luna more then the Marez. In the background it is the llano. Both the moon in the llano can represent the combining of both the Marez and the Luna together.

The path that Antonio and Ultima seems to walk on is goat path Antonio always mentions since that seems to be the only route to get where they need to go. The owl that flies over Antonio and Ultima represents Ultima's owl because the owl "watch[es] [everything]" (Anaya 23). The overall picture can reprensent how Antoino is growing and his journey of his destiny begining with Ultima guiding him and leaving his home to do so.

In the book, Antonio’s parents stays on their land almost all of the time. They feel that since it is their land, that they are protected from harmful people. Their land is expected to be respected and therefore they spend a lot of time perfecting their life on the lot. At first glance, the cover picture only shows the calm and empty land of the Marez/ Luna family. However, after reading the book, we find that there is much symbolism found in the land’s features. The trees seem to be a place of shade and rest on the land but there is “a lurking shadow [of evil] under the juniper tree” (Anaya 258). The mountains symbolize how a destination can seem very close at first, but is extremely hard to overcome. This struggle mostly occurs with Antonio and who he believes truly is God. We also see that the characters are gazing up at the owl. This shows their interest with the magic of Ultima and Brujas, but they aren’t sure how to go along with it.

The woman holding on to the child's hand in the picture represents the family as a whole, as Antonio says, "[...] Ultima will never die, [he] will take care of [her]"(Anya12). In the image the peace and tranquility of the land represents the "llano" and it's significance, by "the men of [it] being men of the sun" (Anya 27). The trees that are scattered around symbolize the on looking of the "juniper tree outside of Ultima's window"(Anya 13).

In the novel and picture, the owl is hovering overhead being protective of Antonio. The owl "was [Ultima's] spirit," letting Antonio "[grow] under her careful guidance" (Anaya 15, 261). Also, in the picture the boy is holding the old woman's hand, representing Antonio's love for Ultima. She taught him everything from the "presence of the river" to the "mystery of the groaning earth" (Anaya 15). his love is so Strong that he wants her to "never die" and that he will "take care of [her]" (Anaya 12).
